I'm so lucky that I got to see this. What an incredible thinker. I'm very late to a better understanding of what it was like for so many from that era to run into the buzzsaw of such a brilliant mind. Her art invites you to join in- to be present both physically and mentally. To make choices. Another unintentional member of the "subversives" that, through history, have the audacity to question power brokers and the status quo. And another glimpse into the gamut of reactions those types of questions evoke: fear, humor, kinship, etc. Go see it before it's gone!

Charlie XCX
Charlie XCX creates a great musical backdrop for this fever dream of a film. Watching it was disjointed and kind of preposterous on some levels, but I don’t care. It’s fun when films are provocative, and part of the reaction is because it messes with expectations around something that’s part of a canon. I thought selecting Miss Charlie to accompany this visual romp was perfect and lovely. She creates a big sweeping sound that is great companion to the world of “extra” that Emerald Fennell created.

Questlove
For me EWF are part of the soundtrack of the skating rink because I was a kid when they were dominating the charts and that’s where I heard a lot of their songs. I feel sad that kids today don’t have these kinds of spaces to be adjacent to young adulthood, watching from the sidelines, trying out all kinds of moves. Questlove’s latest documentary is another piece of the legacy he is both building and immortalizing. The footage of Earth Wind and Fire’s early performances are amazing. These musicians were/are truly a force to behold. The history they embody is seminal in every way. Each time Questlove takes a dive, he honors and witnesses not only the musicians, but the larger culture and the socioeconomic mores of they were a part of. The pleasures and the pressures that were the backdrop of a level of creativity that is so fantastic, it’s almost out of this world. Or maybe it’s a bridge into another one? So grateful to be able to peek inside.

Yiyun Li
“Fiction, one suspects, is tamer than life” Li writes in the opening chapter. I feel it’s an invasion of Li’s privacy to describing the event/s that are the genesis of her novel. And oddly, I’m not sure it ultimately matters. Li writes about profound loss with a sparse eloquence. This book gave me an insight into tragedy; that universal experience that in some way, shape, or form is guaranteed for all of us. It changed my understanding of grief in a way that I consider a gift. For those who have not yet begun to live the rest of our lives missing someone, this book is an unapologetic baring that will either make you grateful for the lull before that time, or give you comfort that someone else knows a small aspect of your pain. “You cannot imagine a new space fully until you have been taken there” (Richard Rohr). Li’s descriptive observations of the minutiae of her experience become a macro rumination that compels the reader into a reflexive empathy that is harrowing.
