Two Sisters (LP)

Sarah Davachi
I've been getting into modern organ these days and Sarah Davachi is a staple of the genre. In this release, she weaves minimalist melodies, alternate tunings, and experimental timbres together in a way that is both elegant and otherworldly. Read more

Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love? (LP)

Kara Jackson
Kara Jackson's debut is an impressive one, boasting an authenticity and existentialism many artists take years to stumble into. Her warm voice cradles you through a story of love that will leave you full of grief and tenderness. Read more

Coin Coin Chapter Five: In The Garden (CD)

Matana Roberts
Excellent addition to the Coin Coin universe composer, poet, improviser, and artist Matana Roberts has been building for the past thirteen years. This release challenged how I listen and taught me so much about storytelling, experimental jazz, and modern composition. Read more

I Killed Your Dog (LP)

L'Rain
I've been fascinated with L'Rain ever since I discovered her sophomore release Fatigue in 2021. On this newest record, she remains uncategorizable, incorporating snippets of jazz, folk, R&B, pop, and more, painting a sonic picture of shapes and sounds that I find uniquely playful. Read more

Foxy (CD)

Sparkle Division
A collaboration between modern tape loop genius William Basinski and sound engineer, Preston Wendel. Instead of hauntingly soothing ambient, the duo makes a fun hybrid of swanky lounge and chill downtempo. The end result... foxy B) Read more

In The Throes (LP)

Buddy & Julie Miller
Buddy and Julie have a unique harmonizing vocal sound that's sweet and sticky like molasses. It helps that they write endearing songs mostly about relationships. Also Buddy is a master guitar player and producer who strips a song down to it's essentials. A couple of songs that I think are gorgeous are "The Last Bridge" and "I Love You." Read more

I Am Controlled By Your Love (LP)

Helene Smith
Helene Smith is a name known only to hard core soul collectors. She didn't have any hits, although the amazing "A Woman Will Do Wrong" should have been. However for some contractual reason it is not included here unfortunately. There's also an album on the "Deep City" label called "Sings Sweet Soul" which is highly coveted by soul collectors and goes for sick bucks. But I digress. We are blessed to have this Numero comp that includes most of her 60's output. My faves are the Otis Redding hit "Pain In My Heart," "Gossip Don't Worry Me," "Willing and Able" and the title tune "I Am Controlled By Your Love." Read more

Live From Austin, TX (LP)

Waylon Jennings
This is another great album in the series taken from the Austin City Limits archives. Recorded in 1989, Waylon sounds good and the band featuring steeler Ralph Mooney, cooks. Waylon's wife Jessi Colter sings a couple of tunes and brings some sunshine to the show. You can't go wrong with Waylon! Read more

Fillmore West 1969 (LP)

Grateful Dead
We are in vintage Dead territory here, when hippies roamed the earth. Pigpen was still in the band and they ruled the psychedelic scene in San Francisco. If you loved, the classic red "Live Dead" album from 1969, then this will be your second course. The difference is that this is one complete show from March 2nd, while "Live Dead" was compiled from many shows from the previous few months. All your favorites from the day are here in this five LP box, including "Lovelight," "St. Stephen," "Dark Star" and "Alligator." Read more

Marshall Crenshaw (LP)

Marshall Crenshaw
This is a reissue of Marshall's debut album from 1982. It's pretty much a perfect pop album, chock full of catchy hip tunes. Some of my many favorites are "There She Goes Again," "Someday Someway," "Girls," "I'll Do Anything," "The Usual Thing" and Soldier Of Love." It also has a pleasing art deco-y cover! Read more

Live At the Ryman (LP)

Charley Crockett
Charley is an enigma. He is the face of new roots country music, yet does not fit the normal profile of a star. He's not an especially great singer or guitar player, or have a pretty face. What he has is great instincts for the music and he writes pretty good songs. He also has put together a kickass band featuring great steel guitar from Nathan Fleming. On this double album he plays some of his originals, my faves being "The Valley," "Just Like Honey," "Trinity River," "Odessa" and "Hard Times." Plus he plays some cool covers like Paycheck's "Jukebox Charlie" that he nails, plus an interesting choice that totally works, "Jamestown Ferry." This is a great introductory album if you don't know him, and if you do, all your favorite tunes are here. Read more
