Burning in Celestial Poison (LP)

Black Curse
Imagine Katharsis' later material reworked through the lens of Ascended Dead and you'll have an idea of what this sounds like. Swirling, chaotic black psychedelia that envelops the listener and delivers death by a thousand razor-sharp blades. Read more

Concrete Wiinds (LP)

Concrete Winds
Wow, what a total 180 from these guys! The new Concrete Winds record finds them stretching out over two LPs worth of progressive electro-funk grooves that are sure to fill the dance floor and I'm just kidding this is exactly what you'd expect from a new Concrete Winds record. Twenty-five minutes of uncompromising "Bestial Noise Torment" as only these Ålanders can deliver. A bad time in the best way, every time. Read more

Big Upsetter (LP)

Faze
Delay-pedal vocals in hardcore is certainly something of a trope these days, hoping your listeners won't notice weak riffs or mediocre songwriting by making the vocals sound "trippy." Fortunately Faze has killer riffs and can actually put together songs, so let it ride. Can't wait for Canada to become the 51st state so these guys and the host of other killer Canadian punk and hardcore bands can play down here and not have to deal with US customs. I'm mostly kidding... Read more

Demonolatry (LP)

Abhorration
Death metal as only Norway's finest can deliver. Lean and mean Altars-era Morbid Angel worship that absolutely smokes every other contemporary death metal band. See, I *can* write a blurb about contemporary death metal that I like without dunking on grown adults who think it's appropriate to wear sweatpants onstage. Wait, shit... Read more

Bestial Hardcore (LP)

Gaoled
I think this is the 3rd release from these guys titled "Bestial Hardcore." I guess that makes it easy? Or confusing? Whatever. This absolutely rips. Mean riffs, no beatdown parts, and nobody's trying to be Rick Ta Life or Kurt Vogel. Almost makes everything going horribly awry at home and abroad bearable. Almost... Read more

Alligator Bites Never Heal (LP)

Doechii
If you're reading this and you're into some or all of the releases above and you also love hip-hop, you've definitely heard of Doechii and may have slept on her because she's popular or you don't care about the Grammy's or whatever. Fine. Fuck the Grammy's. But, Doechii has bars, her production is on point, and above all she's just really fucking charming. Read more

Krayat
Bulgars in Berlin bringing the heat! To my ears this has a lot in common with the Burning Spirit strain of hardcore from Japan that mixed thrash and heavy metal guitar theatrics with punk intensity and vitriol. Apparently something similar was happening around the same time (or maybe earlier?) in the Balkans and Greece in the late 80s and early 90s, and goddamn if it's anything like this, what a goldmine. Слава България! Read more

Now You're One Of Us: The Incredible Story of Redd Kross (Book)

Jeff & Steven McDonald

Even if you're not a "Reddhead", the story of the band that Thurston Moore called "one of the most important bands of the last 30-40 years" will astound you...forming in 1978, the sheer love of music has keep the band and their 70's/trash/glam aesthetic together through, er, thin & thin. Check out the recently released doco "Born Innocent" too!

Final Cut (Book)

Charles Burns

From his punky beginnings in the legendary Raw magazine to his best selling "Black Hole" graphic novel, Burns has always been a master at creating a foreboding & Cronenberg-ian tone in his tales of suburban horror, but this graphic novel continues the growth in his character development also…a masterpiece!

A Thousand Threads: A Memoir (Book)

Neneh Cherry

The step-daughter of acclaimed jazz musician Don Cherry, Neneh Cherry has had an amazing life, and it's all in here! From the early London punk scene via Rip Rig & Panic, Float Up CP, & The Slits to her solo success with the “Raw Like Sushi” LP in 1989, she’s been an inspiring and uncompromising artist.

Gideon Gaye (LP)

High Llamas

A few months after I paid over $100 for an original (good timing pal!), this fantastic LP finally gets a reissue on record (along with their 5 other catalog titles). It's one of the best of the 1990's, Stereolab meets Pet Sounds meets Neu, best sampled on the epic (and lengthy!) groove of "Track Goes By"...while the single "Checking In, Checking Out" adds a hooky early Steely Dan vibe...but this is definitely best taken as a whole listen, its mood & subtle wonk will draw you in & get you coming back over & over...killer!

The Chronicles Of Doom: Unwrapping Rap's Masked Iconoclast (Book)

All Over The Place - The Rise Of The Bangles From The L.A. Underground (Book)

Eric M. Shade

Insanely thorough but consistently readable, "All Over The Place" is a fantastic story of the musical osmosis in the LA punk scene (& Paisley Underground shortly after) that resulted in this criminally underrated female band. This story of their early days is a tribute to their determination, passion, & plain ol' good taste.

People ... Hold On (LP)

Eddie Kendricks
I've been waiting for this reissue for a long time! Kendricks, the original falsetto voice of the Temptations, picks up a funky nightclub band (the Young Senators) and records a low-key masterpiece. A clean copy of "Girl You Need a Change of Mind" on vinyl is alone probably worth the price, but you add all these other jams – some sweet, some funkafied, some Movement Soul – and you have a classic. Fun fact: Jeff Beck straight-up lifted the melodically lopsided riff from "Let Me Run Into Your Lonely Heart" for his own use on Blow by Blow. Read more

Antologia Vol. 2 (CD)

África Negra
I missed Vol. 1 of this series of music by the São Tomé and Príncipe group, África Negra, but I will be getting it. This music from the island nation that is due west from the Republics Congo, sounds exactly like if Congolese rumba went on a tropical vacation. Killer! Read more

Jet Set (LP)

Los Straitjackets

I was happy to hear that "Jet Set" had been reissued. Los Straitjackets are always cool, but this album is a notch above their other efforts. It's one of my all-time favorite instrumental albums with great tunes like "Aerostar," "Jet Set" and "Fur Sophia." Give it a spin!

Live From Austin City Limits (LP)

Johnny Cash

ACL is a long running video showcase for (mainly) roots artists. Johnny's performance kicks off with Folsom Prison Blues and proceeds to tear through a number of his famous hits, including my favorite, "Big River." Then he veers into the family portion of the show which is kind of schlocky IMO. However, any JC is good, and much of it is great!

Gone Away Backward (LP)

Robbie Fulks

If you like well-crafted songs with a twist, you need to check out Robbie Fulks. For some reason, he still flies under the mainstream radar although he is a premier songwriter guitarist and has a deep catalog. In his latest album he uses acoustic and Bluegrass instrumentation to beautifully compliment his tunes. My two favorites are "When You Get to the Bottom," and "Sometimes the Grass Is Really Greener."

A Lover Was Born (LP)

Kelly Finnigan

Kelly was previously known for his work with the Monophonics. Here he steps out with some silky '70's style soul. My favorites are "Prove My Love" and "Cold World." I enjoyed hearing him when he played an in-store at Amoeba S.F. I also remember his dad Mike, who was a legendary singer/organist with the "Serfs" and the "Jerry Hahn Brotherhood" among others. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree!
