Amoeba Review

01/18/2038

It's incredible to think that after a 30-year career, Dean Ween of the famous band Ween is just releasing his first solo album in 2016. After Gene Ween took a sudden hiatus from Ween, Dean used the opportunity to let his freak flag fly and unleash an album that's 100% bonkers. Instead of crafting songs with guitar parts that complement the music, he wanted to make a raw rock album where the songs come after the loud guitars, shredding, and nonstop jamming. It's like a splash of cold water when the opening track, "Dickie Betts," begins. All the uncomfortable, almost gross energy of Ween's music is replaced with a jazzy, technical rocker that channels the spirit of The Allman Brothers. Honky tonk pianos slam against bubbly and precise guitar rhythms that feel totally improvised. But the first single, "Exercise Man," is more in the spirit of his previous songs. The twangy Southern guitars feel like an old country swing song after a couple of hits of psychedelics, but the lyrics are pure Ween. It's a tongue-in-cheek attack on healthy exercise fanatics who go on the street to work out and it feels like a well-aimed joke at such a specific kind of person. The epic "Mercedes Benz" is a real stand-out. A lot of the tracks are firmly rooted in country and rock traditions (as weird as they get), "Mercedes Benz" is a seven-minute funk track complete with slow building horns and out-of-this-world oscillators. It's like a lost funky belter from the late '70s, seeped in all its glammy strangeness. Dean Ween's short break from Ween is a tremendously satisfying pastiche of all classic genres and how they fit with his strange world view. A real trip.
