Amoeba Review

09/07/2016

Out of the sun-drenched enthusiasm that seems to radiate from California's unique indie rock scene, Local Natives feel spiritually intertwined with Los Angeles. Between the heavy bass rhythms, oscillating synths, moody lyrics, and the heat that radiates off the album, it couldn't have come from anywhere else. The musical notes give the feeling of sunlight reflecting off glass, palm-lined streets, and the existential dread of thinking "How do I fit in here?" The three years since their last album has given the band the introspection and sensitive distance they needed to create Sunlit Youth. Unlike the grimmer Hummingbird, Sunlit Youth is all good vibes and feels like a breath of fresh air in a world that seems increasingly chaotic and hopeless. Opener "Villany" sounds like a lost '80s soundtrack cut. The arpeggiated electronics build the rhythm while the group harmonizes beautifully and hauntingly over it, creating the chillest late-night drive music you've heard in years. It's as if they're eerily singing for a whole generation when the chorus cries out, "Mine is a chrome palace / Lost in Los Angeles / I know I'll make it through." "Coins" is more closely tied to a classic indie rock sound with sensitive vocals and emotive guitar licks that roll along with an afrobeat rhythm. And when the synths kick in, it recalls the harmonic waves of a mellotron right out of a King Crimson track. "Past Lives" starts off emotionally and is maybe the closest the album gets to being a bummer -- until the drums burst in with all the funky glory of an '80s hip-hop breakbeat. As Local Natives refine their sound and become increasingly more sophisticated, Sunlit Youth stands as a testimony to the possibilities of musical risks and the glorious results that can come from it. A perfect album to get fall started.
