Amoeba Review

07/12/2018

The cover of Dirty Projectors’ newest album, Lamp Lit Prose, is a callback to the visual motifs that heavily graced their Bitte Orca-era, a period of time when they firmly existed in the highest echelons of indie royalty alongside the likes of Grizzly Bear, Vampire Weekend, and Animal Collective. A lot has changed since 2009 and so have Dirty Projectors, as in that time they had since stripped down their sound considerably on 2012’s Swing Lo Magellan before stripping down the band itself: last year’s self-titled release found all Projectors members jettisoned save for founder and mastermind Dave Longstreth. Without a supporting cast for the first time in a decade, Dirty Projectors was a depressive and downcast R&B album that heavily ruminated on his breakup from ex-Projector Amber Coffman. Following this excursion into emotional wreckage, Lamp Lit Prose pulls a complete 180. With a rotating stable of guest musicians accompanying him, Longstreth sounds positively reenergized, and the resulting music might be the most upbeat Dirty Projectors album ever. Lead single “Break-Thru,” with its erratic synth bursts and chiming West African-inspired guitar, is about as much of a statement to that effect as you could possibly make. Yet for a group that has drastically changed sounds from album to album, this is also a record that isn’t afraid to revisit past glories. Those red and blue orbs of the cover art are not the only throwback to Orca, as the hallmarks of that album’s sound all make an appearance here. The twitchy interpolations of classic rock songwriting from “Cannibal Resource” reappear on “That’s A Resource.” “Stillness Is the Move” is felt in “I Feel Energy” with all its fragmented, Caucasian R&B intact. Sure, the backing cast might be different, but Dirty Projectors embrace the light on Lamp Lit Prose and get their groove back.
