Uprising (CD)
Bob Marley & The Wailers

Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 06/07/2010
Uprising is the eighth LP by Bob Marley and the Wailers to be distributed internationally, and their twelfth studio album overall; it was released by Island Records in June of 1980. It’s fitting that the final studio recordings issued during Marley’s lifetime are primarily devoted to spirituality and his inexorable bonds with religion and Rastafarianism; the remaining songs provide contrapuntal relief and descriptions of secular travails. The performances are vital and inventive and beyond the (by this point) standard reggae conventions; guitarist Al Anderson is particularly effective. “Coming in from the Cold,” “Zion Train,” and “Forever Loving Jah” are all tremendous, but it’s the closing acoustic folk of “Redemption Song” that continues to send poignant chills.
