With Harvey turning to piano in lieu of her usual raw-edged guitar, the studio version of White Chalk is eerily sparse and gloomy, capturing a dark introspection that is fascinating to dwell in. The demo versions offer subtle alterations in atmosphere, such as the ghostly background ringing in the demo of “When Under Ether.”
