 After touring with Bob Dylan for his release Highway 61 Revisited, multi-instrumentalist Al Kooper and guitarist Mike Bloomfield went into the studio for one epic nine-hour jam session. They recorded tracks one through five on Super Session with the help of keyboardist Barry Goldberg, bassist Harvey Brooks, and drummer Eddie Hoh. However, when day two of recording came around, Bloomfield (who was a heroin addict) was unable to finish the job, and Stephen Stills was called upon as guitarist. There is no disputing the differences between the sessions, as Bloomfield’s traditional blues guitar style is evident and Stephen Stills’ California rock style makes its stamp on the remaining tracks, most notably on the group’s rendition of “Season Of The Witch.” Despite the marked differences, the album is a fantastic display of these extraordinary players’ talent and synergy. From the opening bluesy “Albert’s Shuffle,” in which Bloomfield shines, to the Dylan-penned “It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train to Cry,” there is no denying how these players lock into each other, and it displays just why they were so in demand. The 2003 reissue includes remixed bonus tracks and producer notes from Al Kooper.
