Neuroscientist and spacey synth-jazz maestro Sam Shepard is back with a new collection of ambient instrumental jams. Reflections – Mojave Desert is the soundtrack to a short film of the same name, a project documenting Floating Points’ time spent recording in the Mojave Desert and first in a proposed series of releases from different natural landscapes all over the globe. Musically, the album evokes the wide, cavernous spaces of the desert it was created in and inspired by. Guitars are drenched with reverb and phaser, creating waves of sound that warble in and out of focus like a heat shimmer. Bright, oscillating synthesizers emulate the whistling winds and echoes of large, empty canyons. Songs go from eerie stillness to busy passages that are almost post-rockish in their clamor, while also touching on more classic sounds reminiscent of groups such as fusion pioneers Mahavishnu Orchestra. Though the film is an impressive work reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s Live at Pompeii, the music is so good on its own that it renders the visuals almost unnecessary; an afterthought to such a vivid aural landscape. Put this one on and let the head movies take over.
