Pirate Prude (CD)
Helium
Amoeba Review

Helium’s debut EP, Pirate Prude, established the Boston band as the forerunners of early ’90s noise pop. The release catches singer Mary Timony’s oscillating signature style between high contrast and uncomfortability. Marrying the feminist lyricism she’d made a name with and a newer, noisier punk sound, this first EP comes off a little clunky in parts. Nevertheless, the droning guitar and Timony's talent for delivering acidic verbal assaults with a feckless tone of a seven-year-old telling you how her day was at school went makes it an interesting listen. Some tracks, such as “XXX,” are not easily accessible upon first listen, but there are rewards to be had if you go back—like finding out that it’s one of the most remarkably complete songs in Helium’s entire catalogue.
