Middle Of Nowhere has to be one of the year's best country albums. An undercurrent of melancholy runs through Kacey Musgraves' latest, even when her lyrics are as winking and coy as they are on "Dry Spell." That's down to the inspiration behind the album; Musgraves writes about liminal spaces, emotionally, physically, relationally. While there's a bittersweet quality to these songs, the music itself is definitely sweet to the ears, with elements of Western swing, norte?o, zydeco, mariachi, bluegrass, and '70s to '90s era country. A gorgeous album.
