Free [Sea Blue Vinyl] (LP)
Iggy Pop
Amoeba Review
08/04/2020
Iggy Pop’s eighteenth studio album, Free, was created in response to his desire to just feel, yes, free in the days after his draining Post Pop Depression tour. It’s a suitable name, as the album finds Iggy in full innovation mode, experimenting with jazz, ambient, and film score modes. He couldn’t have picked better fellow travelers for this excursion; Noveller and Leron Thomas both contribute to this — in the words of Iggy — “uniquely somber and contemplative” listening experience. A surprising, exquisite record where the elder statesmen of punk finds raw power in emotion and exploration.
