Amoeba Review

08/04/2020

Ty Segall’s First Taste is pure, gritty, rock ’n’ roll heaven. Surprisingly, Segall steers clear of the expected garage rock guitar here, instead opting for a psychedelic wall of sound featuring drums and synths. (Segall handled all percussion while longtime collaborator Charles Moothart serves as a multi-instrumentalist.) Naturally, the whole thing’s rough, rowdy, and loud as hell. And with unexpected instruments like a bouzouki, koto, and electric omnichord in the mix, First Taste is bound to thrill. It’s a fascinating sonic evolution from the ever reliable Mr. Segall.
