Tyler Childers’ Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven? is an exceptionally good country album, rich in both musical tradition and forward-thinking ethos. Beneath the surface beauty of the songs lies a simmering urgency; perhaps that’s a result of Childers’ inspiration for the collection. The CD is actually a triple CD, with the same eight songs performed from different perspectives, based in part on Childers’ childhood in the Baptist church, with its belief in the Holy Trinity as well as the horrors of hell. As a result, there’s a fascinating mix of shadow and light, despair and release, all powered by Childers’ remarkable compositions. Highly recommended for fans of old school country.
