Los Angeles rock band Helen Stellar is Jim Evens (vocals, guitar), Clif Clehouse (drums), Dustin Robles (bass), and Eli Lhymn (guitar). Formed in Chicago in 2001 by Evens and Clehouse, the band relocated to Los Angeles in 2003 when their van broke down after driving across the country to perform on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, the third unsigned band ever invited to play on the program. Robles, already living in LA and also from Chicago, joined the band in 2004. In 2009, the band expanded to a quartet with the addition of guitarist Eli Lhymn.
Helen Stellar self-released three EPs, Newton, Below Radar, and I'm Naut What I Seem, between 2001-2004. A song from Below Radar, "IO (This Time Around)," caught the ear of director Cameron Crowe who decided to feature the song in his film, Elizabethtown. Crowe, an avid music fan, released the band's next album, A Prayer To Myself, a collection of the three EPs and unreleased tracks (two on the CD and four on the vinyl), on his Vinyl Films imprint in 2006. Helen Stellar's first official full-length album, If The Stars Could Speak, They Would Have Your Voice..., was self-released in April 2010.
Helen Stellar's music has also been used in the films Henry Poole Is Here and Love Happens, and in television shows like Friday Night Lights and the L Word. Gregg Araki, another director known for his passion for music, invited Helen Stellar to perform on screen in his upcoming film, Kaboom.
