High On Fire – Oakland-based Metal Band
High on Fire is a sludge metal duo consisting of vocalist/guitarist Matt Pike and bassist Jeff Matz. The band was founded in Oakland, CA, in 1998 by Sleep guitarist Pike, along with original members drummer Des Kensel and bassist George Rice. Their first LP was 2000’s The Art of Self Defense. In 2001, the band signed with Relapse Records, which would be their label home for their next three releases: Surrounded by Thieves (2002), Blessed Black Wings (2005), and Death Is This Communion (2007). After a few lineup changes, Zeke bassist Matz became a touring member of the band, joining full-time during the recording sessions for Death Is This Communion.
In 2009, High on Fire hit the studio once more, for the album Snakes for the Divine. The spring of the following year, the band embarked on a US tour to promote the LP. They then opened on eight European dates for Metallica. In 2012, the band released De Vermis Mysteriis, followed three years later by the release of Luminiferous. In 2018, High on Fire released Electric Messiah; the title track garnered them the award for Best Metal Performance at the 2019 GRAMMY Awards.Less
