Kurt Vile’s new one, (watch my moves), is one of the Philly psych rocker’s best. For this reviewer, listening to the hazy, wistful tracks on the album calls to mind the first time Kurt Vile burst onto the scene—these songs feel just as striking and unforgettable. Retro synths and jazz horns add brilliant texture to the melodies, which alternate between gritty and grooved out and plaintive and nostalgic. Over it all, Vile’s vocals add even more dimension, the lyrics build a hypnotic emotional tension, his voice sometimes droning, sometimes heavy with yearning. One of the year’s best releases, this one will likely earn many spins on your record player.
