V (CD)
Niia
Amoeba Review
Niia's take on jazz is fervent, modern, and intoxicating. On her fifth studio album, V, the singer, pianist, and composer takes a multi-faceted look at love: the bittersweet pull of loves gone by, the tooth-and-dagger fight for survival post-heartbreak, the droll denial of any lingering feelings. Album opener "fucking happy" has that slow burn, sensual classic jazz feel, with a contemporary lyrical sensibility that puts the singer's heart under a microscope. Niia closes the album with her version of the beloved jazz standard "Angel Eyes" and it's heady and haunting. A remarkable album from a singular talent.
