Amoeba Review

James Blake is back with an enchanting, soothing new album. Trying Times is a fitting title for this introspective, all-too-relatable album. Blake brings a gentle touch to songs about desperation, anxiety, fear, and defiance. The lyrics can sometimes feel striking when juxtaposed with the downbeat magic of these tunes...and that's what makes the album so quietly, miraculously powerful. These are torch songs that hold the light in the darkness, companions for the days when we can't see the sun but just have to believe it's there.
