In her own words, The Age of Pleasure is Janelle Monáe's "love letter to the diaspora." While previous  Monáe outings have been more cosmically-inclined, The Age of Pleasure is straight down-to-earth, preoccupied with pleasure in all its forms, and guaranteed to get listeners into a groove. Strong Afrobeat influences weave throughout the album, as do elements of disco, soul, and reggae. "Float" is an ode to feeling good on the dancefloor, with Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 adding to the vibe. "Lipstick Lover" is a sexy summer jam made for gettin' down. The Age of Pleasure lives up to its name: This is the type of album that just makes you glad to be alive.
