It's only January but Julian Lage's Scenes From Above already feels like a strong contender for year-end best jazz album roundups. The compositions are evocative and delightful with moments of joyful exuberance and languid beauty. Lage collaborated with producer Joe Henry yet again for this one and his new quartet features keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Jorge Roeder, and percussionist Kenny Wollesen. Imaginative, gorgeous, and just plain dazzling, this one's a treat.
