Amoeba Review

08/09/2017

Originally released in 1981, Return of the Giant Slits is the Slits’ second studio album and the last album before their initial breakup. Anyone with a passing familiarity with their influential debut Cut knows The Slits didn’t record necessarily straightforward or commercial music, but Return takes their skeletal, reggae influenced punk skronk to another place entirely, incorporating elements of free jazz and world music and who knows what else. If you think “Typical Girls” is out there, try “Face Place,” a cacophony of dissonant French Horn/piano/guitar explorations alternated between drum machine and harmonia assisted sing along dub. It sounds like if the Incredible String Band, at their very weirdest, happened to stumble across a Desmond Dekker record. “Improperly Dressed” takes backwards Frank Zappa-horns and applies them to a skittering drumbeat and nervous lyrics, while squint hard enough and “Earthbeat” sounds like something Fever Ray might release, 30 years before the fact. An otherworldly masterpiece never issued in the US on vinyl, until now.
