On this self-titled debut of sorts, David Berman of the legendary Silver Jews returns with the charmingly gloomy Purple Mountains. The melodies are vivid and full-bodied, the lyrics simple yet smart-as-hell. In short, it’s everything you want from Berman, served up hotter than ever. “Drinking Margaritas at the Mall” is a wry take on a not-so-standard existential crisis. “All My Happiness Is Gone” is a bruised, beautiful bummer you’ll be happy to wallow in. With a little help from Jeremy Earl and a handful of other members of Woods, David Berman and his Purple Mountains are making some of the most incising and insightful indie music out there today.
