Pollen (CD)
Christopher Willits
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/13/2010
San Francisco-based musician Christopher Willits has developed a unique language via guitar and custom designed software since the early part of the ‘00s. Although 2002’s Pollen was released after his record for the 12k label, the excellent Folding, and the Tea, it was in fact recorded prior and is in a sense Willits’ debut. The amount of glowing warmth Willits is able to coax from his computer is stunning and that overall tone defines Pollen. Best taken as a whole, the tracks all seem like variations on a similar idea as Willits feeds his guitar into the software. The results are highly melodic, but fractured, sliced and stretched, forming ever-evolving shapes and patterns. Imagine a combination of Endless Summer-era Fennesz and mid ‘90s Oval. Pollen hints at the grand music Willits would later make, and stands as a great introduction to his work.
