Ow (Infinity) (CD)
Sylvan Esso
Amoeba Review
Sylvan Esso's new album is one you'll want to listen to again and again. Ow (Infinity) is wise and gentle, beautiful and bold. The title comes from the band's idea that there's pain in life, there will always be pain, but if you're not putting yourself out there and potentially facing down that pain, you're missing out on the magic, and thus the pain-to-joy continuum continues. The melodies reflect that concept: the Y2K-era indie banger "Hot Slob" is ebullient and heady, the dreamy indie pop of "Concrete Glen," with its prominent Sigur Rós sample, is lovely and bittersweet. A treasure of a record, Ow (Infinity) touches on something very special and very real.
