Amoeba Review

Like 2019's Teeth Dreams, The Hold Steady's eighth studio album finds the band drawing on their rawer earlier sound, while still maintaining a fresh sense of energy. The rumbling bass and emphatic spoken vocals of "Family Farm," spiced up with horns and piano, embody the overall sound and satisfying feel of the record. "Heavy Covenant" features an uplifting, angsty chorus amid droning organ and stomping drums. "Spices" is a characteristically moody, night-on-the-town story that somehow bursts into a hopeful chorus. It feels like a spirits-lifter at just the right time.
