Ooh La La (CD)
Faces
Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 05/27/2010
The Faces at their peak were replete in charisma. One look at their lineup tells the story: Rod Stewart on vocals, Ron Wood on guitar, Ronnie Lane on bass guitar, Ian McLagan on keys, and Kenney Jones on drums. However by 1973, Stewart was enjoying massive solo success, and tensions in the band were rising. Ooh La La is the band’s fourth LP, with the criminally under-appreciated Lane taking the helm; unfortunately, it’s also the group’s last. It’s a shame, because at their best the Faces rivaled the Rolling Stones for rock ‘n’ roll swagger and strut, mitigated with Stewart’s endearingly sincere, working-class empathy, and sweet pop underpinnings.
