Beloved country singer Sturgill Simpson rides into town with a new album from his Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds moniker. Mutiny After Midnight feels like a forgotten gem from the 1970s, but this time, instead of outlaw twang, it's a mix of boisterous country-rock, mournful piano rock, lonesome AM gold, and seductive, soulful funk. The melodies are layered and lush, compelling and emotionally affecting. The lyrics are fierce and a little freaky: the album's driving question seems to be "Why not find a little sensual pleasure as the world's being dismantled?" Atmospheric, moving, and often surprising, this is one of the year's most exciting releases so far.
