L7
Amoeba Review
Joanna Ricco 05/26/2010
In the same vein as the Runaways, the eponymous, sludgy debut album for Los Angeles’ own L7 gives insight into what they were to become—a fusion of L.A. punk and 1970s style metal. Formed by Suzi Gardner and Donita Sparks in 1985—both of them guitarists and singers—this release is heavy on the punk bedrock, leaving Roy Koutsky’s drumming to get somewhat lost along the way. Sneering and even sophomoric, L7 takes the opportunity to get in your head by whatever means necessary with this 1990 record, and, while certainly not pretty, it’s pivotal for fans of “girl” punk.
