Kathy & Carol (CD)
Kathy & Carol
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 08/17/2010
Folk duo Kathy & Carol recorded one LP for Elektra records in 1965. Producer Paul Rothchild has called it, “the most beautiful Renaissance ballad record I ever heard.” He also said that the album is “just perfect. If you like Joan Baez, here’s Joan Baez times two, with gorgeous harmony, singing purist songs like angels.” Indeed Kathy & Carol’s close harmonies are angelic while their renditions of traditional material remains deeply rooted. The arrangements are sparse, with simple guitar or dulcimer as backing, recalling Appalachian dulcimer queen and folk song interpreter Jean Ritchie. The duo only recorded one album, and for fans of traditional folk music, this album is a gem that is not to be missed.
