Isaiah Rashad is back with the wonderfully-named It's Been Awful. For an album about living through tough times, it's a surprisingly pleasant listen. Other thematic elements include gratitude simply for being alive, resilience in spite of family issues and histories of addiction. That's reflected in the sound. As heavy as things sometimes feel, there are always moments that feel like falling in love (in spite of it all), as evidenced by the hazy, dreamy sounds of "Supaficial" and hazy "Boy in Red" (ft. SZA). Jazz flourishes add slinky, late night soulfulness. Melodies get woozy and distorted. A moody masterpiece with melancholic appeal.
