Okkervil River gets a little weird on their rootsy alt-country-informed latest LP, In the Rainbow Rain. There’s a heavy dose of Bruce Springsteen and No Depression bands on tracks like the extra catchy “Don’t Move Back to LA” and “Pulled up the Ribbon,” while there’s a head-turning humor and strangeness to “Famous Tracheotomies,” in which frontman Will Sheff lays down the story of his own youthful throat operation in context of — you guessed it — the historical tracheotomies of the rich and famous. It’s a great opening to an album that’s strong throughout — vulnerable, earnest, and very personal moments like this grab the listener’s attention in a pleasant yet compelling manner. The world can always use more love songs and Sheff and co. truly deliver on this most recent LP.
