Amoeba Review

10/05/2017

Alex Lahey's self-assured debut, I Love You Like a Brother, perfectly embodies what being a young adult is. It's a beautiful rock album with pop punk and power pop (double pop!) influences and the result is a little rough around the edges while being filled with wit and teenage laissez faire attitude. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Lahey abandoned her regimented training in jazz to start experimenting with the raw power of the crazed music collective Animaux. Through that, she was able to explore new sounds and create some of the most fun indie rock songs in years that feel like they were just birthed naturally in all their realness. "Every Day's the Weekend" is the anthem for post-collegiate confusion and coming to grips with your adulthood. For an era where finding steady work and stability feels like an impossible task, this song finds a type of joy in this level of freedom. With the '80s post-punk guitars clicking along and her distinct sing-songy voice leading the way, it's impossible not to get into the song's chorus with all its "Oh ohhhs" and chanting rhythm. "I Haven't Been Taking Care of Myself" is a more revealing track where she plainly displays her faults in such a sympathetic way. She captures this type of awkward, post-relationship life where you are still a mess after the end of something so intimate that you find it impossible to balance your own life. It's hard to think of another solo indie debut in recent memory that's not only this fun, but also hits so many notes right (metaphorically and literally). There's something cozy and comfy about listening to an album like this. You'll feel like you're twenty again.
