Heaven Tonight (CD)
Cheap Trick
Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 06/07/2010
The catchphrase “Big in Japan” most certainly applies to Cheap Trick. Their third LP, Heaven Tonight, was released in 1978, and it struck the right balance between hard rock and pop; however, like the first two records, it failed to break the Top 40. “Surrender” was the first single; it did chart, but only went as high as #62. The second single, "California Man/Stiff Competition," sank. Meanwhile, all three LPs went gold in Japan, where Cheap Trick were huge rock stars. They would tour there in 1978, and record two sold-out shows at Budokan, the massive arena in Tokyo. Success was imminent.
