Young Guv’s Guv III & IV feels like it comes from another distant, more cosmic, more grooved out era. And it does—although 2020 might not instantly spring to mind when you’re thinking about spacey psychedelia and warm washes of experimental sound. Recorded after Young Gov’s US tour came to an abrupt halt in the early days of the pandemic, this double LP is the result of Ben Cook and his bandmates retiring to the high desert in New Mexico where they created their own little commune of sorts amidst the uncertainty and isolation of the time. That’s probably why the tracks feel like they’re reaching out across time and space to provide the coziness and the connection we’re all longing for. The mood shifts seamlessly as Cook and co. weave genres together with gently psychedelic threads; there’s a dash of ‘60s Brit rock, a bit of yearning Americana, and a dose of hazy late ‘70s swirling sounds. It’s a heady stew but one that’s heartfelt, homey, and enjoyable.
