Gorgeous George (CD)

Best known for the international pop hit “A Girl Like You,” Edwyn Collins’ 1994 release Gorgeous George is a solid U.K. pop album from the one-time Orange Juice singer. Collins’ third studio album was his first since 1990’s Hellbent on Compromise, and it was triumphant in versatility—though pop ballads come as easily to Collins as saying hello does to the rest of us, the soulful and folksier elements broaden things a bit, as does Paul Cook’s drumming. Problem is, the prominence of “A Girl Like You” easily overpowers the album as a whole. Schmaltzy to the point of being nearly comical on tracks like “If You Could Love Me,” the best thing you can say about Gorgeous George is that it’s unobtrusive . . . but ultimately, this slightly edgy collection of tepid love songs would be better served as background play.
