Freak Out City [Glacial Blue Vinyl] (LP)
Bret McKenzie
Amoeba Review
Bret McKenzie lets the good times roll on Freak Out City. As a member of Flight of the Conchords and an acclaimed solo musician in his own right, McKenzie writes warm, witty, delightful songs steeped in '70s piano rock style. Freak Out City is his second record for Sub Pop, written while on the road performing across the US and New Zealand, and the songs have the rollicking, heart-on-their-sleeve quality of works by Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman (two of McKenzie's musical heroes). An entertaining, well-crafted, thoroughly enjoyable album.
