Fairy Rust is an apt description for Wombo’s third album. Drawing inspiration from classic Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson tales (with a bit of Washington Irving thrown in), the album is dark, moody, and bewitching. The Louisville trio conjures up dazzling musical worlds, rich in possibility and post-punk intensity, but (as the stories tell us) magic, once invoked, doesn’t always go in the direction we’d prefer. The melodies seem to hint at that unpredictability, imbued with beauty and wonder, there’s often an undercurrent of uncertainty and melancholy. Fairy Rust is a surprise, a delight, and an enchantment.
