Different When It's Silent is Tricky's first album under his own name in six years. (During this time, he released an album and accompanying film under the moniker Lonely Guest, and collaborated on projects with Adrian Thaws producer Mike Theis, and with Marta Zlakowska.) What a welcome return this is! Melancholic, raw, and beautiful, the album simmers with the fevered intensity of his most beloved work. His new manager called Different When It's Silent "the best thing since Maxinquaye." That sounds about right. Steeped in the grief of his daughter's passing, moments of light and joy and hope shine through in this layered, transcendent, breathtaking album. This is essential Tricky.
