Mumford & Sons always seemed the most unlikely of candidates to be the face of chart-topping, world-conquering success. On the surface, their formula could best be described as quaint: take what Robin Pecknold started in Fleet Foxes, add a few sing-along choruses and polish it up with a sparkly production for pop radio. If that’s your expectation going into their 4th record, I’m here to tell you that Mumford & Sons are quaint no more. Delta is full of widescreen, IMAX-worthy moments, with a production that manages to cram nearly every known sound under the sun into an hour of music; including, of all things, a Paradise Lost reading. Even when the songs aren’t deliberately crafted anthems, such as on the tender “If I Say,” the band never resists the chance to build to a dramatic crescendo. Get your popcorn ready, folks.
