Amoeba Review

08/23/2017

together PANGEA brings on the real punk with their latest album, Bulls & Roosters. No weird electronic misfires, no corny computerized voices, just pure punk rock. With only two albums and a few odds and ends, the Los Angeles quartet never lost focus on their voice, and working with producers like Tommy Stinson of The Replacements represents how pure they're trying to keep their sound. Their garage punk by way of Factory Records sound makes them instantly more palatable as they choose catchy, short melodies and riffs rather than going atomic with the more radical side of punk. The strong-arm percussion is much more interesting in precision rhythms that get funky and danceable and could almost be confused for lost obscurities from the 1960s. "Kenmore Ave." wears the influence right on its sleeve when it starts off with the iconic line from the opening of The Beatles "Ticket To Ride." But it doesn't use it as some type of crutch to attach the song to a bygone era; it uses the freedom of the opening line to go ape on an angry bitter, track about a relationship that's gone far beyond toxic. It makes sense that bassist Danny Bengston wrote it while in rehab; it's too crazed, maddening, and delirious for most people to write. The goofier side of the album is felt in "Better Find Out," which was written in the middle of a chaotic tour. The song is like going 200 mph on a winding freeway as the track seems to speed endlessly forward until it's done in a little over a minute-and-a-half. You can almost miss the lyrics being thrown in your face as they are as funny as they are pissed-off. "Money On It" channels Bob Dylan in his late-'70s mode where things got janglier, stonier, and more relaxed. It's romantic and weird and makes you feel all sorts of feelings. And even though you aren't sure if they're being totally earnest, it feels right. Bulls & Roosters is a good way to wind down the summer. Los Angeles doesn't always have to feel like blistering sun. It can also feel like this: disorienting and cool.
