Amoeba Review

The Drums’ Brutalism pulls off the unlikely feat of melding the melancholy with the danceable in one tightly-wound nine-track album. Now the sole project of Jonny Pierce, the songs are self-deprecating, smart, and introspective. Tracks like "626 Bedford Avenue” are both catchy as hell and painful as hell, with Pierce recounting a particularly vulnerable moment in a would-be-relationship gone wrong. Here lies the album’s emotional effectiveness; there’s a soft core beneath the glossy, ultra cool exterior. Highly recommended for fans of intelligent indie at the intersection of post-punk and electro.
