A Picture of Nectar (CD)
Phish
Amoeba Review
Joanna Ricco 05/26/2010
For a goofy jam band with a fondness for the absurd, Phish’s 1991 A Picture of Nectar is surprisingly well focused. (Or, as focused as a jam band’s going to get). With big-time production, the opening track, “Llama,” uses Trey Anastasio’s clever vocal arrangement over succinct playing/drumming. . . call it purposeful intensity. “Tweezer” takes a nearly nine-minute funk/psych stroll through lyrical pastures that can’t be anything but improvised. Where other parts of A Picture of Nectar may frustrate Phish fans looking for full-fig jam freak-outs, songs like “The Mango Song” reel Phish back in (ahem) with its sweet harmonies. As the second coming of The Grateful Dead, A Picture of Nectar should be distributed to every incoming freshman for the next 20 years.
