A Lesson Unlearnt (CD)
Until The Ribbon Breaks
Amoeba Review
03/19/2015
Pete Lawrie-Winfield initially started Until the Ribbon Breaks as a solo project while in film school, until he called James Gordon and Elliot Wall to fully sculpt his noir-pop sound. Samples of David Lynch films slam head-on into an 808 drum machine and flowing ambient-like synths in a beautiful cacophony of wonder. Just when you're ready to dance to its throbbing beat, the lyrics freeze you with intellectual R&B tragedy of love and passing feelings. The album starts to project like a film on a tattered screen as "Taste of Silver" introduces you with a taste of soul and feel of trip-hop. The end of act two culminates with "Revolution Indifference," an album showstopper that cocks its guns and blasts Run the Jewel's El-P and Killer Mike like a secret weapon. By the final track, "Pressure," you reach a broken and bittersweet ending that reminds you that love doesn't conquer all. Few albums have a dramatic cinematic arc and feel quite like A Lesson Unlearnt as each song creates image that cut in-and-out of each other and delicately as the best movies.
