He plays with crescendos and moments of stillness, arranges woodwinds and horns to emulate traditional Irish folk sounds, creates tension and release with explosive guitars and brisk piano. Fans of Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley, and grandiose, heartfelt songwriting will dig this one.

Cost Of Living Adjustment [Tangerine Vinyl] (LP)

Cola's Cost Of Living Adjustment has to be one of the most satisfying post-punk albums of the year so far. The Montreal trio makes smart, somewhat deadpan art rock that's razor sharp and quite beautiful. These are songs that catch at the heart without feeling downbeat; this is an album you can get lost in for a wistful yet pleasant three-quarters of an hour. Fans of Australian post-punk and indie acts like the late great The Goon Sax and the legendary The Go-Betweens will dig this.

These tales of love and loss, drifters and outsiders, are perfectly suited for Bingham's gruff voice. An album that feels urgent yet timeless, melancholic yet hopeful.
