DJ Quik is an MC and producer who came up as a West Coast gangsta artist during the '90s. Born David Martin Blake in Compton, California, Quik's love of music started early with the influence of his mother's record collection and playing instruments beginning at age twelve. He made a name for himself on the mixtape circuit during the late '80s, selling and compiling tapes which also featured fellow rappers AMG, 2nd II None, and Hi-C.
With the buzz from his mixtapes, he was signed to Priority Records and released his debut full-length, Quik Is the Name, in 1990 at just 21 years old. Quik produced all the tracks on the platinum-selling Quik Is the Name, including the hits "Tonite" and "Born and Raised in Compton." After the release of his sixth album, Under tha Influence (ARK 21, 2002), Quik formed his own label, Mad Science Recordings, on which he has released all his subsequent albums. In 2009 he released a collaboration with Kurupt, BlaQKout (Mad Science, 2009). His most recent album, The Book of David (Mad Science), was released on April 19, 2011.
DJ Quik has produced albums for other aritsts including 2nd II None and Hi-C. He has also contributed productions to albums by Tony! Toni! Tone!, 2Pac, Jermaine Dupri, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Talib Kweli, Jadakiss, Jay-Z, Ludacris, and Murs, among many others.
