The Worm (LP)
HMLTD
Amoeba Review
Concept album meets rock opera meets the deeply, ebulliently weird on HMLTD's The Worm. Recorded over a two year span with forty-seven artists, including a string orchestra and a gospel choir, The Worm is about (you guessed it) a worm. But this is no ordinary crawler: the world frontperson Henry Spychalski paints in his compositions is a dystopian, anachronistic Old English mythological setting, and the titular worm is both the "parasitic worm" of depression and anxiety, and the societal structures that feed into the depression. The album is far from a downer, however—it's grandiose, stirring, and almost joyful with its ringing choruses, swelling strings, and lyrical focus on making the world (and our own inner worlds) a better place, worms and all.
