Bunnydrums - Biography

By Marcus Kagler

The post punk experimentalism of Bunnydrums never quite took off during their heyday in the early 1980’s. Although the band opened for the likes of REM and Gang of Four, the Philadelphia-based quartet never took to touring, so their notoriety remained within the confines of their native city. Formed in 1980 by vocalist David Goerk, guitarist Frank Marr, bassist Greg Davis, and drummer Joe Ankenbrand, the group self-released their debut EP, Feathers Web, in 1981. After signing to indie label, Red Records, the band issued their debut full length, PKD (1983 Red Records). Instead of touring to support the album, Bunnydrums focused on developing a Philadelphia-based collective of musicians called the Funk Dungeon. Bunnydrums did tour behind their sophomore full length, Holy Moly (1984 Fundamental Music), yet mounting tensions within the group combined with several lineup changes brought the band to an end in 1986. Bunnydrums’ albums and EPs remained out of print for years until Metropolis Records issued the collection PKD/Simulacra in 2003.
