Headlights (CD)
Alex G
Amoeba Review
Alex G's Headlights has all the makings of a cult favorite. The songs are catchy and moving, the lyrics are — at times — deliciously weird. The melodies are rootsy and raw, charming in their vulnerability and authenticity. The instrumentation adds a warm, folk-inflected glow to the tracks, with banjo, mandolin, strings, and accordion bringing piercing beauty and a rollicking momentum to the tracks. Alex G's lyrics are relatable, with a focus on heartache, being cash poor, and evaluating your life from the vantage point of some years gone by, but the style is uniquely all his own. (Consider "Beam Me Up," written from the POV of a football player with passing thoughts of alien abductions.) A must-hear.
